Environmental Focus – Venoco operates three offshore platforms in the Santa Barbara Channel, an oil field on the coast of Oxnard, California with wellheads less than 1,000 feet from the ocean and an oil field on the border of the cities of Beverly Hills and Century City.
Nearly all of our operations are located in populated areas with sensitive habitats, agricultural land or with residents as neighbors. Our employees are mindful of the impact that business can have on the communities and sensitive environments that surround our facilities. In all operations and at every facility we maintain a watchful eye on safety and a genuine concern for the environment.
Because of the sensitive nature of the areas where we operate we adopt stringent environmental policies and procedures accepted and executed on all levels of the company from the senior management team to personnel in the fields to technical staff in the office. Being an environmentally focused operator is paramount.
Safety – Venoco places the utmost importance on the safety of Venoco employees, third party contractors, the general public, and nearby marine- and wildlife. For this reason employees and contractors complete wildlife care training, follow strict worker safety procedures and attend regular heath and safety briefings.
“An experienced and professional team knows that progress is made and success is achieved when each individual works at their highest level. The Venoco team is focused on attention to detail, safety compliance and environmental protections in every aspect of our work.”

Federal Regulators Recognize Venoco as a Top Operator
All of Venoco’s offshore platforms, technical teams who operate those facilities and the safety practices in place are evaluated by the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE), a division of the United States Department of the Interior. Venoco is recognizes as a top Operator in the Pacific Region for platforms Gail & Grace in the federal waters of the Santa Barbara Channel.
BSEE also performs rigorous evaluations of worker and environmental safety compliance for operators in Federal waters. The awards were formerly known as the Safety Award for Excellence, and Venoco earned that award several times for platforms Gail and Grace.
The Safety Award for Excellence (SAFE) Program was developed by the Minerals Management Service (MMS), the predecessor to BSEE, to recognize and commend operating companies that expend extra effort in conducting their operations in a safe and pollution-free manner by adhering to all regulatory requirements, employing trained and motivated personnel and going beyond mere compliance.
The MMS has been replaced by BSEE and today that regulatory body conducts rigorous evaluations of worker and environmental safety compliance. While BSEE no longer issues SAFE Awards, Venoco continues to be recognized as a top operator in the Santa Barbara Channel as a result of the rigorous evaluations.
Venoco is a recognized responsible corporate citizen for our commitment to investing in the communities where we operate by funding non-profit organizations dedicated to enhancing education opportunities and safety net programs for under-represented and under-served populations. In addition to recognition by the local communities where we operate, Venoco was selected by Oil & Gas Investor magazine as the 2005 Best Corporate Citizen. The award is given to the company that has made the most significant impact in its community.
In addition to the awards highlighted above, Venoco is proud to have been honored by several business and nonprofit organizations and energy industry associations for our business practices, community support and safe and responsible operations.
