Funding Guidelines

Mission: To be a leader in corporate giving and volunteerism, creating partnerships with organizations that strengthen and enhance the communities in which we live and do business.

Funding Targets: The Venoco Community Partnership (VCP) is focused on providing assistance to groups and programs in geographical areas where we have business operations and resident employees. We typically do not fund national organizations unless they have a large presence in the local community and the majority of the funds raised are used locally. Factors included in the evaluation process are how the services provided impact the community at large or the target group, and the level of passion, commitment and focus of the requesting organization as evidenced by their past accomplishments and current vision.

In order to make the most effective use of our resources; we have identified the following program areas as those we fund, in varying percentages:

  • Children, Youth and Families
  • Health and Human Services
  • Civic and Community
  • Arts and Culture
  • Environment
  • Education
  • Sports

Fundraising events: Funding will be considered for such events based on potential return on investment, effectiveness and cost vs. projected return.

Capital/Endowment requests: Multi-year funding must be pre-approved by CEO. Funding will be considered in light of the potential impact on the community, and availability of funds.

Multiple requests by single organization: VCP discourages multiple requests within a calendar year funding cycle. We ask that you project your organization's needs and consolidate into one grant proposal. Budget: The budget for this program is set annually by the Venoco Board of Directors and is subject to change. Grant proposals will be accepted for consideration from Jan. 1-Nov. 1, or until the annual budget is depleted. In the case were funds for a calendar year are expended prior to Nov. 1, proposals that are not time sensitive will be tabled for the following January, at the consent of the organization. Please note: Proposals for an event or program that is time sensitive should be submitted a minimum of 3 months prior to the date of the event/program.

Eligiblity: To be eligible for consideration an organization must:

  • Have a clear purpose, be efficiently organized, provide a needed service to the community and provide evidence of successful delivery of program services.
  • " Qualify as an IRS 501 ( c) 3 non-profit organization.
  • Provide services and programs in areas where Venoco has operations and where employees reside.
  • Serve the community without discrimination based on race, sex, sexual orientation, color, age, religion, national or ethnic origin, or physical disability.
  • Provide programs that are accessible and open to all segments of the community.

It is our intention to provide support for services that have the greatest impact on the greatest number of unduplicated individuals in the community, and this may influence whether Venoco funds requests from an organization.

The following are not eligible for funds:

  • Individuals or individual sponsorships
  • Political parties, organizations, candidates or campaigns.
  • Association or membership dues.
  • Field trips, tours and travel expenses, unless demonstrated as integral part of program offered by organization.
  • Annual meetings, conferences and conventions.
  • Religious organizations whose activities promote a particular doctrine and/or primarily benefit members of the organization. Faith based organizations may be considered if the program will benefit a large portion of the community and religious belief is not a requirement for receiving services.

Although an organization may meet all the eligibility requirements set forth above, that does not guarantee approval. Denial of grant requests is at the sole discretion of Venoco Inc.

Application Submission: : Applications may be faxed, mailed or emailed. Grant applications are accepted from January 1 through November 1. Please allow 8-12 weeks for a response to your request. Generic mass mailings will not be considered for funding.

Application Process

  • All organizations requesting funds must complete an application and submit it to Venoco with all required documentation.
  • Completed applications will be forwarded to the Foundation committee for review. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed until all required documentation is received. VCP meets once a month from January to November.
  • A committee of Venoco employees review grant requests once per month to allow for further research, and to prepare recommendations for the Committee at a subsequent meeting.
  • A site visit or interview of the requesting organization may be required if the committee feels more information is needed to adequately review the request.
  • Recommendations are forwarded to the Board of Directors for final approval.
  • A letter will be sent to the organization once a final decision is made.

Final Status Report: All organizations who receive funds must complete and submit a final status report 90 days after funds are received by the requesting organization or a fundraiser/event has occurred. Future requests are not automatic and reports are an important factor in future funding decisions.
